Setting the scene

The world is being reordered by artificial intelligence, by the reindustrialisation of economies, and by the contest for energy and critical minerals. Each of these forces runs through Africa.

01
Artificial Intelligence & Semiconductors

Compute has become strategic infrastructure, and the materials and energy it depends on are not evenly distributed.

02
Reindustrialisation

Businesses and governments are reconsidering where productive capacity should be located and how resilient supply chains need to be.

03
Energy & Critical Minerals

The transition and the digital economy both rest on minerals and power, and on the ability to process them close to source.

Why Africa

The fourth force is Africa itself, and it is the combination of four things — not any one of them — that constitutes the case.

People

Africa is becoming the world's principal source of new workers, new consumers and new enterprise, at a moment when much of the rest of the world is ageing. Its young and increasingly connected population is not a future market but a present one, and the businesses that serve it are being built now.

Resources

The continent holds a substantial share of the minerals on which energy, advanced manufacturing and technology now depend. The opportunity is no longer only in finding and extracting them, but in processing them closer to source and capturing the value of doing so.

Land

A significant share of the world's remaining uncultivated arable land sits on the continent, alongside the water and the labour to work it. Productivity, processing, logistics, finance and market access remain the constraints — which is precisely where capital can act.

Integration

The African Continental Free Trade Area is building a single market across 55 countries. It changes what is worth building on the continent, because it changes who can be sold to from within it.

The other side

We believe that financial capital alone cannot build enduring economies and institutions.

Africa also needs the trust, integrity, moral conviction and shared purpose that allow people and institutions to work together over the long term. Cushland therefore considers the cultivation of spiritual capital part of its broader mission alongside the mobilisation of financial capital.
